Visit the State Capitol: a 360-degree view of Denver and the nearby Rocky Mountains is your prize for climbing to the top of the gold-covered dome. A brass 'cap' marks the spot that is exactly one mile above sea level (on the west steps).
Tour the U.S. Mint: Free tours are available from 8am - 2pm weekdays, excluding federal holidays.
Ski Ruby Hill Rail Yard: The Denver Parks & Recreation Dept has been erecting rails in the Ruby Hill Park for snowboarders and skiers to practice their tricks (at no cost) on what was traditionally a neighborhood sled hill. As of February 09, the opening has been postponed due to 'Mother Nature' - check back for updates.
Visit the Denver Art Museum:On the first Saturday of every month, the Denver Art Museum offers free admission. (general admission tickets are $10 for Colorado residents and $13 for visitors).
Take a walk in the Park: Denver is home to more than 200 parks, rivers and trail areas, public golf courses and recreation centers. If your trip brings you to Denver in July, don't miss the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival at Sloan Lake, northwest of downtown.
Tour Coors Brewery: free tours of the brewery in nearby Golden are available. No tours on Tuesday, Wednesday or major holidays.
Tour Dinosaur Ridge: self-guided tours of the tracks and fossils of Dinosaur Ridge in nearby Morrison are free.
Visit Garden of the Gods: not in Denver, but nearby in Colorado Springs, a visit to Garden of the Gods Park with it's tall, thin red rock formations is free and a 'must' if you have time for a day trip.
Cheap things to do
Go to a Colorado Rockies Game: baseball season begins in April -- 'cheap' seats at Coors Field start at just $4 (if you're under 13 or older than 54 - it's just $1)
Enjoy a Concert at Red Rocks: located in the foothills west of Denver (just minutes from the Holiday Inn Denver Lakewood), the Red Rocks Amphitheater is the best place to enjoy a concert under the stars. If you're visiting around Easter, be sure to attend the free Easter sunrise service.
Hungry? 'For a song' , take advantage of food carts along the 16th Street Mall selling everything from hot dogs and bbq, to paninis and burritos. McCormick's Fish House & Bar boasts a happy hour from 4 - 6pm with half-pound burgers and fries for only $1.95.
Bus: city buses are just $10 one way and $18 roundtrip between DIA and downtown. Discounts are available for senior citizens and students. Fare around town is $2 per trip and $6 for the day.
Free shuttle: a free shuttle runs up and down the 16th Street Mall from the Capitol to Union Station.
Light Rail: light rail train easily gets you in and out of downtown. fares start at $2 (discounted fare of $1 available for seniors 65+ and students) . Holiday Inn Denver Lakewood offers free transportation to the light rail station in Englewood.
